‘It is in the Southern Oceans that the study of ocean temperatures at different depths is expected to afford the most important result'
Captain George Nares led one of the first expeditions to study the world oceans. The expedition sailed around the world between 1872 and 1876 and discovered over new 4,000 species.
The expedition collected so much new information that the results of the expedition filled 50 books and took fifteen years to publish.
Some of these findings are still used by scientists today. Nares left the expedition after two years to try and reach the North Pole.
