How do we know about the polar oceans?

Science at sea today

‘The Weddell Sea Expedition 2019 will give us an unprecedented opportunity to investigate and explore one of the most remote, and least-studied places on our planet.’

Professor Julian Dowdeswell, Director of the Scott Polar Research Institute.

The Weddell Sea expedition will use remote-controlled submarines to study the Antarctic Weddell sea. The expedition will set sail for Antarctica in 2019. Submarines will be sent under the ice to research the seabed and marine life below. The submarines will also look for Shackleton’s ship, Endurance which sank in 1915.
