How is climate change affecting the polar regions?

Shrinking ice caps

We explore the dynamics of the Greenland Ice Sheet to understand how physical properties and hydrological networks evolve over seasons and over multiple years

In Greenland, chunks huge chunks of ice are breaking off glaciers and into the sea. Some of these chunks of ice are far bigger than this museum. Glaciers are giant slow moving rivers of ice. Climate change is causing many to speed up, shrinking the Greenland ice cap and causing sea levels to rise.

Scientists from the Scott Polar Research Institute are researching why this is happening in through the RESPONDER project. They think the changes may be down to increased amounts of melt-water caused by rising temperatures. This water may be lubricating the glaciers and causing them to move more quickly
